You may have come upon this article in your frantic search for those elusive University places – you may also have come upon the article because for whatever reason you did not attain the ‘required’ level of achievement.
Well the first thing is DON’T PANIC this world is full of successful people who never went to University and who never attained any real qualifications to speak of at all.
Despite the rhetoric churned out by the last Labour Government and out dated ideas of past generations the idea that a ‘Degree’ is a shortcut in life to a good job, riches and fulfilment are far from the modern reality.
Let’s consider a few obvious conclusions –
1. If everyone goes to University and gets a degree then degrees effectively become a meaningless assessment of one’s individuality and abilities.
2. In the past it was possible for the chinless wonders of life to get a degree in some obscure subject and land him or herself with a plumb job in the Civil Service or some other role which they were totally incapable of carrying out. Thankfully this is not longer the case every business large or small has to ensure they employ people who can actually carry out the tasks they are given. I am pleased to say that this is now at last being applied to the Civil Service jobs albeit rather late in the day – but still better late than never.
3. Because the above was a fact many years ago the majority in the lower ranks of society developed a mind-set that gaining a degree (of any sort) was the only way to advance in life. Thankfully there were other more enlightened and self motivated individuals who thought differently and saw the old system for what it was ‘flawed’ in favour of the well off who would endeavour to demean the efforts of those that tried to enter their bastion of higher education and ‘jobs for the boys’.
What needs to be considered on an individual basis is – do you really need to spend another three or more years of your life studying for more qualification whilst at the same time running up a mass of debt before you then venture out into the wide world?
